Only Rain in the Drain

A few years ago, the middle school at which I work underwent a major addition/renovation.  The builder told us that a unique feature of the school property is that it straddles two different watersheds... one side flowing to the James River (Chesapeake Bay) and the other to the Roanoke River (Albemarle Sound).  According to this INTERACTIVE MAP, the builder didn't get it quite right.  The high school straddles the two, but the middle school is entirely in the Roanoke River watershed.  Oh well, it's still neat to be so close to the border.

I often complete my early morning runs by running in circles around my middle school, mainly because one time around the large loop plus two loops of the running track equal one mile.  (The running track isn't quite a quarter of a mile.)  A few weeks ago, I noticed these painted pictures and signs on the storm drains in the bus loop, reminding us to be conscious of how we dispose of trash and liquids.

I don't know who painted them or why.  (I hope isn't because sports families that utilize our soccer and baseball fields were polluting our ecosystem.)  Whatever the reason, it was nice to see that someone took the time, using artistic talent, to remind us that we each have a role to play in keeping our planet a healthy place to live.  We all depend on it!  Only rain in the drain!
