Small Steps Lead to Big Gains. Which Direction Do You Want to Go?

Today I saved all my old SparkPeople blogs to PDF.  One in particular caught my eye:  “The Power of One Decision.”

Even though I’ve been on SparkPeople for 220 days straight and logged [most of] my food for 89 days, I’ve made a lot of negative decisions that seemed small at the time.  Those choices added up because I refused to own them.  If I knew I was going over my calorie limit, I simply quit entering the food.  Most days I didn’t worry about going over my limit because I figured I’m still well within a normal weight range for my height.

However, that number at the upper end of the range is getting closer and closer.

I need to take a look at the decisions I’m making so I can reverse course.

Every time I felt like getting a snack today, I reminded myself of the power of one decision.  If I wasn’t really hungry, I didn’t eat.  If I wanted something sweet, I told myself I'd wait until after dinner and then I’ll eat only one serving.

Since SparkPeople is going away on August 17th, I need to learn to control my food intake in a new way.  Logging every food was a bit time-consuming and I wasn’t being honest, anyway.

I can either lose weight or gain it.  I will try to be mindful of the small decisions I make every day.  These are steps that can lead down one path or the other... weight loss or weight gain. I know which way I want to go!

  1. Have you found a new tracker? Tracking on paper? I'm starting to try out something called cronometer. It's both a website and an app. Canadian developed. Not going to recommend, but just putting it out there because I didn't know about it until I found a reference to it in one of the Maintenance group threads.

I've seen others are trying MyFitnessPal, and some others, and Spark says they will be adding a food tracker LATER to the Spark America (Spark360) platform. If tracking is part of the solution for you (and me), finding a tool we feel comfy with is a good first step!

    Happy decision making this weekend!

    1. I think I'm going to try not logging my food. It wasn't really doing me much good, anyway! :p Now if I start gaining a lot, maybe I'll re-think that decision...

    2. I had already been "not logging", and also thinking that meant I could go after food for reasons other than hunger. So... playing with new tools, I'm logging again, for about a week. We shall see how consistent this makes my behavior, shan't we? LOL!

  2. Happy to see your new blog!! I've been "not tracking" for about 2 years using the "intuitive eating" approach plus some intermittent fasting -- so far, OK with the weight that results. Not my absolute "lowest achievable" but . . . other good benefits.

  3. Ah, yes ... the power of choice in the moment ... when we're conscious. Awareness has been key for me. Without the awareness the choices made are mindless choices that aren't necessarily serving me. Clearly, you're aware that you have the power to choose. Good luck to you Lady Arabesque! ~ JEANKNEE

  4. I for one do need a nutrition tracker but, I am going to wait until the one promised shows up on spark 360. So for now I will stick to the tracker on spark. I know myself and it just wouldn't work for me.
